Veterinary Assistant (Harris County)

Openwork is partnering with Harris County to hire a mission-driven Veterinary Assistant for a high-volume shelter and clinic. If you thrive in fast-paced environments and care deeply about animal welfare, we’d love to meet you.

Why this role matters

As a Veterinary Assistant, you’ll be on the front line of shelter medicine—supporting exams, treatments, and procedures while maintaining a safe, organized clinical environment. You’ll also help educate pet owners and collaborate closely with the veterinary team to deliver high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform daily animal husbandry and compassionate care under medical supervision, following safety protocols.
• Keep medical workspaces clean and organized; stock supplies and sterilize surgical instruments.
• Accurately document treatments, diagnoses, and procedures in the shelter’s software system.
• Administer medications according to treatment plans and veterinary direction.
• Obtain samples and perform diagnostic tests as directed.
• Assist with safe animal restraint, radiography, treatments, and preventive care.
• Educate pet owners on responsible pet ownership and post-treatment instructions.
• Uphold health and safety standards in a high-volume shelter setting.

What We’re Looking For:

• High school diploma or GED (required).
• 6+ months of experience in animal care, shelter, or clinical settings.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and accurate data entry.
• Clear, professional verbal and written communication.
• Team-oriented, adaptable, and effective in a fast-paced environment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

• High-energy shelter environment with potential exposure to allergens, odors, noise, and temperature changes.
• Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and stooping.
• Ability to lift and restrain animals/objects up to 50 lbs .

Schedule & Compensation:

• $16.50/hour , paid weekly.
• 40-hour workweek with rotating weekend shifts.
• Flexibility required to meet shelter needs.
